The problem is people confuse the pleasure of consumption—that pleasantness—with the arduous, underpaid, exploitative, highly volatile nature of production. Ppl liking seeing, hearing, touching, feeling, experiencing art…doesn’t mean regular working artists spend everyday happy, well-fed and safe.

Many ppl have so much venom towards artists, often based on the perception that artists experience something (a pleasant career, visibility, status) that’s ‘not deserved.’ Hence they cheer gen ai. I’ve see many ppl cheering the end of whole creative industries let alone singular careers or crafts.

Douthat argues that a party should respond to electoral defeat by moving closer to the center and by default the other party's line. But this is famously not what the GOP did in ... 2024. Or in 2016. Nor did Reagan moderate the GOP platform in 1980. And FDR did nothing of the kind in 1932.

An even better rule of thumb is to never do what your political and ideological opponents say you should. That alone should be enough for Dems to ignore Douthat's advice here. But in addition to being intellectually dishonest about 2024, he's also staggeringly wrong about US politics.
