The reference for this is from the ASRA guidelines & is based on the catheter tip culture in 214 parturients with labour epidural. Rates of colonisation were 9.2 vs 7.6% (ungowned vs gowned). The background paper states that there’s no good evidence for their use. Not sure that translates well.
