In 2022 I wrote TV pilot script set in 2026. Based on an idea by @rupertread.bsky.social & grounded in what climate science said lay ahead. There’s much I’d do differently when I look back on the script now, but the opening 5-10 pages basically describes the exact scenario unfolding this summer.

A generation betrayed by a politics, a media & a society lacking the conscience, the courage & the imagination to end an economic system that necessitates the burning of their futures, their hopes & their dreams. The most shameful betrayal in the history of our species.

Scientists have warned us that our planet is hotter than it’s been in 125,000 years. That CO2 levels are their highest in millions. Yet as fires rage & people die, our governments remain in the pocket of fossil fuel corporations. Every flame is a deliberate political choice.

I’m an atheist, but I’ll accept the existence of God before I ever accept the existence of a trillionaire. Capitalism is the most extreme & dangerous form of brainwashing ever committed on the world’s people.

41C in the UK? In 2015 the IPCC warned world leaders not to breach 1.5C as it would unleash “frequent & severe droughts, heatwaves & rainfall.” We’re now on track for 2C in years, 3C in decades & 4C in our children’s lifetimes. The most spectacular failure of leadership in history.

40C+ again in Europe in the next two weeks. Again, a reminder that El Niño has barely got started & is not contributing to this. Things will get more unpredictable & extreme. Societal derailment looks set to define the coming years.

It looks like things are going to get worse before they get worse.

Who needs horror movies? El Niño 2026 - the final death blow for warm-water coral reefs. A quarter of all marine life rely on reefs for their survival. A billion+ people depend on the oceans for their food.

It would be no surprise at all to see this year and next breach 1.5C - quite possibly by a significant margin - and never again drop back
