My realization the unions had sold out was the ‘22 Labor Conference after the election, when the unions gave up their opposition to AUKUS on the promise of many high paying union jobs. So far those jobs are in American and UK shipyards funded by Australian tax payers many of whom belong to a union.

Most of the Australian trade unions have long been sold out by their ALP executives! My union sold out in the mid-80s under Hawke! At least back then, there was a half-decent chance of rank-and-file candidates being voted in. Now unions are stitched up and enmeshed in the ALP; toothless & compliant.

Union movement has become a career path for aspiring politicians, so it’s unlikely that they will rock the boat that floats their preselection prospects.
