With Maduro gone, Venezuela must decide on the status of his absence. According to the Venezuelan constitution the National Assembly can declare the presidency abandoned, but if it does new presidential elections must be held within thirty days (art 233). If this is “justice,” it is poetic: ➡️there is no international law that justifies Maduro’s capture, ➡️but there is also no law capable of hiding the theft of the July elections. Narratives of sovereignty vs. democracy fail to cover the fact that the power struggle has been laid bare. What comes next?

Marco Rubio is reportedly saying Maduro will stand trial in US courts. Which means it’s now the US administration’s position that US courts can hold foreign presidents, but not the US president, accountable for crimes.
