At Common Wealth US, our goals of climate transition and decommodification demand that we understand the economy as it actually exists — not just models, not just vibes, no dead reckoning. Without this kind of map, the coordination that underlies our policy strategy and goals would be impossible.

We are proud to announce the launch of Forces of Production — a new monthly newsletter tracking the supply side of the US economy. But first: do you know where the US economy actually is right now? Not how it feels, but what it actually does all day? Most don't. And that's the problem.

The problem from their point of view is that rapid decarbonization requires public, collective decisions about the organization of production, in a way that threaten capital-owners' authority over both the production process and the political system.

The IRA was surprisingly effective at spurring investment in green energy. Where it failed was making it *politically* sustainable by delivering immediate tangible benefits to the public. In that sense, the Green New Deal was, in retrospect, the more prudent and realistic approach.
