The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste

Reading Michael Barclay's fantastic history of Canadian music from 2000-2005 (Hearts on Fire). One thing that really jumps out is how often musicians of the era credited their success to cheap rent. Small grants and a few bucks from shows go a long way when you're paying three hundred a month!
