An absurd argument, along the classic lines of 'but your honor I'm an orphan.' He's arguing against rule of law on the grounds that he's a felon. Hence an actor with an interest in destabilising rule of law. Hence we shouldn't try to have rule of law lest we face a critical mass of guys like him.

I'm not sure this is the only way to read what happened. But say so. It's hard to reason coherently about jury nullification and the rule of law. Obviously BAD jury nullification is bad. But is it plausibly part of the 'proper' legal function of a jury to check rogue prosecutors, in effect?

In Terry Gilliam's "Brazil" the government is fighting 'the terrorists'. There are bombings. But it isn't clear there actually IS any organization behind it. The dialogue about the terrorists is all nonsense. Tuttle isn't a terrorist, just a freelance heating engineer.

I'm a pretty funny guy but I want to be even funnier so I am listening to John Mulaney comedy albums and I'm going to sort of steal his tricks - which is fair. In my everyday encounters with other people I resolve to spontaneously make more jokes that are designed like John Mulaney-style jokes.

Bovino has taken from Trump the lesson that you can barge through any legal barrier if you are clownishly exaggerated and insistent enough about refusing to admit the obvious.

From Bovino's deposition: (1) he calls protestors "violent" if they articulate views hostile to ICE, even if no violence is manifested; (2) he instructs his forces to attack and arrest protestors who express "hyperbolic comments," which is to say, criticism of ICE and Bovino.

Relieved that voters resoundingly rejected this fascist bullshit. Angry that we still have at least another year of it, probably another three, and that we're by no means in the clear. Livid that it all could have been avoided if we had simply not reelected the asshole who tried a coup.

The discourse on X. ‘Nobody thinks the Heritage Foundation has embraced Hitler, Nazis and antisemitism. We can’t be divided by these lies.’ And the replies are all running ‘yeah we need to unite against the (((media elites))) to stop people from dividing us against ourselves like that with lies.’

The world has a legitimate interest in not being blown up. It's no good for Americans to tell the rest of the world it's our own damn dumb business who we elect President. We really owe the world a responsible President.

The Kindle app on my laptop just crashed and gave me "Namespace DYLD, Code 4 Symbol missing" by way of excuse. I deleted and reinstalled the app. No dice. I checked how to clear cache to clean reinstall. I was told to go '~/Library/Caches' and clear any 'Kindle' there. There's nothing to clear.

MAGA's attempt to use the "insurrection clause" against Mamdani is absurd, but it's also a very deliberate statement of right-wing impunity, given that Trump actually did spark an insurrection but the Supreme Court ruled that he was not constitutionally ineligible to hold public office.

I'm on a Richard Widmark kick. Last night I watched "Panic In the Streets" with a truly impressive Jack Palance (seen here menacingly menacing Zero Mostel). Also, Barbara Bel Geddes in a bland role and that cute kid from "5000 Fingers", being a cute kid. Elia Kazan does like waterfronts.

Robert P. George acts like he's challenging 'no enemies to the right' but he's just averting his gaze from 'any allies to the right?' If there is 'no place for such people in our movement' that cancels (yes!) Trump hence Trumpism hence MAGA hence - how not? - the R Party. Join the Bulwark man.

This belongs in a class of driver's license question options gimmes for test-takers exhibiting baseline pro-social and self-preservative instincts. I remember: 'if an oncoming car has its brights on you should' and one option was 'turn your brights on so they can't see either'.

This is the opening of the Grokipedia entry on George Floyd. I think we can all agree that Floyd did not become well known around the world because of his "lengthy criminal record." Opening the entry this way is seemingly an attempt to manufacture consent for his killing.

Legally, this is no different from Iran sinking a Disney cruise in international waters and then saying "it's all good, they were terrorists carrying drugs." Which is to say, it's wholly illegal and has been for centuries. You couldn't even do this with a Letter of Marque and Reprisal.
