One of the things that personally drives me crazy in the U.S. is how youth sports/athletic activities went from a part of the public good (municipal leagues and fields! rec centers! public parks!) to a privatized, expensive, highly competitive, highly structured pursuit for wealthy kids’ résumés

We were talking about circle of fifths root movement in class today. I played a quadruple plagal cadence (C, G, D, A, E) and asked if it sounded familiar. Someone immediately identified as "Time Warp" from Rocky Horror. The kids are alright.

There is a lot of tech we are impressed by — I think a better question is why isn’t the right impressed by solar panels or mRNA vaccines or electric cars or a multitude of other incredible moves forward that they’ve thwarted at every turn

This "why does the left hate AI?" thing is like when the right believes protests are paid for by George Soros; they need a SECRET CONSPIRATORIAL AGENT because they refuse to believe that, actually, a lot of people are independently looking at what AI is being made to be and saying "ok that sucks?"

‪The moment when the Democratic party repudiated Jesse Jackson and what he represented--which is what the "Sister Soulja moment" was--is an important origin point of so much of what makes the Democratic party useless and also kind of the enemy, too

I’d love to get every single Democrat on board with “abolish ICE and dismantle DHS” but you’re going to need some votes from folks who don’t want to embrace that particular rhetoric and good news “there’s just too much corruption we’ve got to dismantle it to solve the problem” is sitting right there

Your inability to love the process of creation enough to devote yourself to it is not a gatekeeper, Kim Petras' record label, which refused to drop her new album, is a gatekeeper. Warner Bros, which scuttled Batgirl for an insurance payout, is a gatekeeper

like it’s sort of true that working class people tend to not have as much free time to learn things as those more well off, but that’s an issue with a system that forces people to have to constantly work to survive. ai comes from the same system: at best it’s a band-aid, at worst it’s facilitating.

partially, i think it presumes that the reason working class people don't make music is that it's 'difficult', and AI makes it 'easy'. which in a way is the flipside of the thought that people are rich because they worked hard for it, and you're poor because you didn't work hard enough.

While we're debating AI: in 1939, Clement Greenberg dismissed Norman Rockwell and Tin Pan Alley as kitsch. Now we respect it. So won't we have a critical re-evaluation of AI slop in the future?

"GenAI helps working class people make art" is bad, but I feel like people don't talk about the very obvious reason why it's bad. Best case you're treating the symptoms of a bigger problem, *or* people are trying to sell us a way to do art without stopping production.

I just spent the last two years of my life producing a 22 track instrumental album. I am not rich, never have been, and I made everything with two computer programs (FL Studio, Audition) and the skills and knowledge I cultivated from 25 years of making music. I've been doing this since I was -19-.
