This approach is incompatible with the Public Sector Equality Duty, human rights obligations and modern, rights-based policing. It undermines trust, erodes legitimacy and places transgender individuals at heightened risk during police interactions.

The framing of transgender identity as a “complex debate” rather than a protected characteristic signals a worrying alignment with hostile narratives. Trans communities deserve safeguarding, not suspicion.

The accompanying letter from Assistant Chief Constable Paton makes clear that the priority is the comfort of police staff, not the wellbeing of the communities most affected. No meaningful consideration is given to the harm, trauma or fear this will cause to trans people.

This policy does not protect the public. It does not advance equality. It creates a formal mechanism through which trans people can be interrogated about their bodies and identities, a process that is degrading, unnecessary and open to abuse.
