Writing is an exercise in the art of persuasion. If we use AI we lose the art | Alan Finkel
Every reader deserves to be informed about whether what they are reading is human or AI A few weeks ago, Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert, an academic in political science at Macquarie University, wrote an opinion piece in the Sydney Morning Herald in which she reported on excessive use of AI chatbots by students to write their essays. In it, she raised her concern that universities are qualifying lawyers, nurses, financial advisers, engineers and teachers who do not have the essential skills required to perform their roles. If that is the case, the societal consequences are obvious. Continue reading...

Richard Scolyer, acclaimed melanoma researcher who tried experimental treatment on his own brain cancer – obituary
Pathologist and athlete who was Australian of the year in 2024 underwent a bold experimental treatment after devastating brain cancer diagnosis At the peak of his career and fitness, the leading melanoma researcher, pathologist and athlete Prof Richard Scolyer received a devastating diagnosis of aggressive, incurable brain cancer. His response was to approach it as one more opportunity to boldly advance medicine by undergoing pioneering treatment on himself. Scolyer, who has died aged 59, became Patient Zero in a novel and risky experiment after his diagnosis of a grade-four IDH-wildtype glioblastoma in May 2023. Encouraged by his colleague and co-director of the Melanoma Institute Australia, Prof Georgina Long, Scolyer agreed to be the guinea pig in a revolutionary treatment regime. Continue reading...
