Yeah we may need a thread of Tips For Surviving The Cold and/or Ice and/or Snow again. (As long as folks can like, be normal about it & not forget the entire south has like 7 snowplows)

you guys would be so much happier if you posted at work instead of at home. work is for being miserable and slacking off. home is for being happy with a cup of spearmint tea and a blanket and a book

Since there are a lot of people insisting that protests don't matter and the Trumpists can simply ignore public opinion: I just wrote about why this idea that authoritarian regimes are impervious to public pressure is very wrong and basically just perpetuates the regime's assertion of inevitability:

The Limits of Violent Authoritarianism
Trump’s authoritarian desires are boundless. But the past year proves that his ability to impose them on America is not.

'Why aren't they in the streets' is answered almost every day in my small town by people in the streets! Rather than asking 'why aren't they in the streets' it's worth asking 'why isn't your media showing them in the streets' and 'who is served by downplaying resistane in its myriad forms.'

I feel like if you're on bluesky and you're not following anyone who makes it clear that the Americans are in the streets all the time, you should keep that quiet instead of advertising your terrible choices in who to follow.

I do have to point out that even with a more-accepting society, there is a gulf between "I am okay with queers" and "I am okay with my kid being a queer". People can support LGBT rights in the abstract and then get spooked when their own precious cinnamon roll makes them a "non-traditional family".

I think I previously unfollowed some prominent writers when I realized they're still on substack (because you're allowed to unfollow anyone at any time for any reason, and also it's a fair standard to hold people to) later I ended up re-following them, having forgotten that entire train of thought

But what happened instead is that people communicated, gathered information, mediated between folks who wanted more extreme actions and those who seemed to think we were all just being inconvenienced but likely weren’t in danger.

Minneapolis and Saint Paul have basically mobilized into a war economy of mutual aid and non-violent defense. I’ve never seen anything like it, even during Covid. People who barely vote are guarding their schools from ICE and doing the shopping for neighbors in hiding.

“But what deeply troubles me now is that for all the steps we've taken toward integration, I've come to believe that we are integrating into a burning house." Dr. King said this famous quote on March 27th, 1968, mere days before his murder. But the context around the quote is interesting...

German Jews were citizens of Germany at the start of 1933. By the end of 1933, the Nazis had removed citizenship from naturalized citizen Jews. In 1935, all German Jews were fully stripped of their German citizenship. Citizenship under dictatorships is contingent for targeted minorities.

It's a classroom version of the 'if you tell people the actual positions & agenda of the Republican Party, they won't believe you & think it's an unhinged partisan attack' You can't tell the truth about what's happening in US politics without sounding partisan.

To those who are claiming that it'd be too cruel and extreme for the EU to cut off American tourist visas now (or to otherwise sanction or inconvenience us Americans in any way).... You're REALLY not gonna like what happens if the madman Trump is permitted to set off a hot war with Europe.

MLK was only 39 when he was killed. Growing up, I thought that was old. But I’m 43 now and I’m stunned by the burden he shouldered at such a young age. I’m also a lot more aware of how hard it is, at any age, to carry the hopes and dreams of an oppressed people on your shoulders, as so many do.

People who were actually enslaved believed that chattel slavery would end one day. I'm sorry but to me that suggests that you [who are not enslaved in 2026] can also imagine an end to the current horrors.

"If the inexpressible cruelties of slavery could not stop us, the opposition we now face will surely fail." As someone on here said recently, the enslaved could imagine a world without slavery, we have no excuse to accept our current reality as our inevitable future.
