A lot of liberals and Northerners throw around a lot of sarcastic shit about leaving consevative Christianity and are absolutely blind to the grief and sense of isolation that comes from leaving that group AND from having been part of it.

As my parents have gotten older, they've migrated even further from the "secular world." Imagine having parents with whom you can discuss NO media or culture you consume, and who will either not acknowledge you spoke or say some degree of "you're making that up," if you mention current events.

Growing up in the culture I did, the world had to be getting worse as it grew ever closer to the End Times. But you couldn't kill yourself because you'd go to Hell and you had to keep having kids because "like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of ones youth."

I think one of my biggest disappointments moving into the secular world was realizing how influenced by Christian attitudes it is. *I* was promised that you all were completely godless! So annoying.

People don't understand how insulated certain (conservative evangelical) Christians are. Yesterday, my daughter's kindergarten did a parody of Katie Perry's Dynamite, and my mom was like "I've never heard a song like that before." It's like having a parent from another country, or planet.

My dad literally turns every conversation into "and that's why people need Christ," and I always want to reply "Sure, because that helps YOU a lot!"(Hint: it doesn't) He can't hear something and have compassion for someone, it's always "they need Jesus"; assuming no one I know is already Christian 😤
