The ravenous, all-consuming narcissism that has rotted the mind of this man requires that every event, every tragedy, every circumstance be ultimately about him. Others in the world do not exist as fully human; they operate only to validate Donald Trump. This is a gross display of mental illness.

Trump and Co. haven’t been dismantling US institutions just this year, they’ve been doing it since 2017. America has been democratic backsliding into authoritarianism for nearly a decade. Much of what we see now builds on what they did in term 1 and advanced in the interim. But too many denied it.

The U.S. is mirroring a pattern that has happened in authoritarian regimes around the world. When a government erects barriers to reproductive care, it doesn’t just cause death and suffering for women and their families. Such policies are often a first step in the gradual decline of democracies.

We already know the Trump administration has been lying about ICE “targeting the worst of the worst” — the actual numbers tell the truth. The government’s own data shows only 15 % of those detained had any prior criminal convictions, and just 3 % were violent offenders.
