This week's edition consists of a single masterwork shown from four perspectives. It's a pendant called "Of Solstice Light Reborn": wingssilverwork.com/of-solstice-.... Old sterling coin silver; copper, blue-flash Labradorite; citrine; orange jade.

This one grew out of an entirely different set of works, a multi-piece commission that consisted of 3 bolos and a pair of earrings. Those pieces were all wrought of old sterling coin silver, heirlooms belonging to the client that he wanted Wings to turn into heirlooms of wearable art instead.

This one was left over, and the client left it with him to use as he wished. These were old coins, pre-1935, when U.S. silver coins were still actually made [by legal requirement] of sterling silver.

By the 1960s, that requirement had dropped to less than sterling, albeit still some 90% silver; since 1965, "coin silver" has no silver content at all, only a blend of nickel, copper, and zinc alloys. These, though, were the real thing, which made them heavy and solid.

Wings hand-cranked the coin through the rolling mill enough times to expand its diameter substantially [and thin it somewhat]. He then stamped the surface in the layered-crescent border pattern shown here.

At center, inside the outer ring of stones and beneath the focal stone, is a hand-coiled copper spiral overlay. That, too, grew out of the same commission: The bolos were to bear a version of the Irish Triskelion, the three coiled infinity spirals that mark the stones of Newgrange.

Because silver is much harder, Wings did a few dry runs using softer, more flexible copper. This was one he saved for future use, and it was perfect here.

After overlaying the spiral, Wings fashioned a round saw-toothed bezel for a 10-mm cab of blue-flash Labradorite. He ringed it with 8 smaller round cabs, alternating 4 citrine and 4 rare orange jade . The bail, a simple stamped flare, holds 3-mm sterling silver snake chain.
