I think the narrative "there was a lot of polarization in reaction to the fact that electing Barack Obama failed to End Racism" is not correct as far as electoral analysis/the marginal voter, but I think for *partisans* it's a major animating force.

I think "let's just white knuckle it for 2 more weeks" is easier to sell than "let's just white knuckle it for 3 more years" A late Reagan or late Biden scenario where the inner circle take on more and more of running the country while Trump grimaces for the camera is more likely.

I am not a Schumer apologist but he is trying to present himself as The Adult In The Room, and nobody else is.
