In most of the world day-to-day weather variations are still much larger than long-term global warming. As a result, both daily record highs and daily record lows remain common. However as the world warms, new daily record highs consistently far outnumber new daily record lows. 🧪

A quite remarkable rainfall event is unfolding in south and east Denmark. Some stations have seen over 100mm in the past 24 hours, with Neble in the far SE recording 136.7mm so far. The Danish all-time 24h record is 168.9mm recorded in July 1931. There are increasing reports of flooding.

Why isn't such a system already in place anyway? There are tornado sirens in many severe weather prone parts of the U.S. as part of the weather warning communication framework. The same should happen in flash-flood-prone regions, and this part of Texas definitely is one!

OTD 10 years ago a devastating (I)F4 tornado, the first of its kind since 1970, struck the Riviera del Brenta area of the Venice province causing massive damage, destroying numerous buildings, throwing cars and debarking trees. 1 man died and 72 more people were injured

WPC issued as many as six MPDs for the deadly flash flooding in the TX Hill Country starting yesterday evening and lasting through much of today. The first MPD generally set the stage for what was to come, while the next three shown were as the event unfolded.

The WPC statements and the NWS flash flood emergencies were issued, but it hit in the middle of the night in a highly vulnerable area on a holiday weekend. So sad.

The flash flood disaster in Texas is a stark reminder that despite warning systems working very well with plenty of theoretical lead time, the last, crucial bit of communication and subsequent decision/making by the people affected remains a challenge.

Two days of severe #heat with over 38 °C in #Germany! Such temperatures were and still are extreme for the country and therefore potentially dangerous. However, the frequency of severe heat events (>= 38 °C) has been noticeably increasing for around 20 years.

Western Europe summer high temperatures have increased ~2.6 °C (4.7 °F) during just the last 50 years. That's in a world with only 1.4 °C of global warming.
