YES. At C2E2 last weekend, a piece of advice I gave out a LOT was, just... make a li'l 20-page story, first. Do not come out of the gate first-thing with your "Love and Rockets"-length magnum opus. That is a mistake. TAKE IT FROM SOMEONE WHO KNOOOOWS

OPINION INCOMING: I think that “the story is for kids” is a useful reminder sometimes! Not as “and therefore garbage is fine,” but rather: “you, the adult, will receive the story differently.”

If it's not obvious based around all the anti-AI stuff I repost, I don't use AI and don't like it. I don't want it associated with Cloud Puppy or any of my work. Most of my work is for children and I think children deserve a quality product made with care just as much as any adult.

You draw a comic at least three times. Thumbnails to plan the panel layout and page count, sketches for writing, planning & text placement, inking. Then if you're nasty you can do the extra step of coloring/shading. (This is unless you're French and go straight to inks, the French are not real)

I will never use AI to write anything. Even if it weren't ethically dubious, using AI to write is like having a robot do the reps during weight lifting. Your writing skills will deteriorate. Your voice will atrophy. I genuinely don't understand why any writer would do it. Makes no sense.

Dial was the first publisher to publish my books. Those books got me through a really difficult time in my life. I can't believe this is how they're being treated now.
