To add: this report is really a call-to-action to get better data and research for solar in Africa....

Solar panel imports will reduce OVERALL imports - because the value of diesel imports eclipses the value of solar panel impors. A solar panel in Nigeria now costs just $60, and can repay the cost of diesel for a generator within 6 months - and even less in other countries.

These solar panels will provide a lot of electricity. The solar panels imported into Sierra Leone in the last 12 months, if installed, would generate electricity equivalent to 61% of the total reported 2023 electricity generation, significantly adding to electricity supply🤯

Yet another plot twist that just a few years ago would seem incredible in a dystopian cli-fi novel.

Solar + Wind generation crossed 4,000 TWh in 2024 and will cross 5,000 TWh in 2025 then 6,000 TWh in 2026. Global coal-fired generation is forecast to move into slightly negative territory in 2025 following growth of 1.3% in 2024. US will see coal consumption grow, offsetting declines elsewhere.

IEA's mid-year electricity review is out. Some highlights below: First time in 100 years, renewables are set to overtake coal in global electricity production as soon as this year (or latest next year). Wind + Solar contribution to global grid mix will reach 20% by 2026, up from 4% in 2016. 🧵

If this where on the other side — if some actual climate report written by an actual climate scientist 'recycled' a paragraph this way — there'd be a plagiarism 'investigation', a concerted media campaign to get the person fired, statements from fellow scientists sounding indignant...

But hey, at least the earnest scientists writing the 'report' in support of the EPA move are sticking to the reuse-reduce-recycling adage. Christy, Curry et al (2025) apparently 'recycling' Curry (2018) 🙄

📢India's fossil CO₂ emissions in first half of 2025 up *only* 0.9%. Preliminary data show very slow growth in emissions from both coal and oil, and a decline in natural gas. 🧵

Solar capacity has been growing strongly in India, reaching 116.2 GW at the end of June.

As someone with several papers cited, I can say that - at least for the sections I know most about - this "report" is full of selectively chosen studies, misrepresentations and half-truths, specious logic, and dated science

The article mentions also Ethiopia, for which I have not yet seen reliable data... but given their import ban for internal combustion engine cars, one can expect the curve to look similar (and the text mention the current share to be even higher).... not coincidentally also hydro at play...
