Just acquired: two tiny pamphlet printings of the preliminary and final Emancipation Proclamation, published in Boston in December 1862 and January 1863. Made to be distributed freely and to be carried south by Union soldiers and given, in particular, to formerly enslaved men who might enlist.

A reminder that a lot of thoughts that feel like facts (in particular the dark ones like, "Things are pointless") are in fact *feelings* and will pass. Hope this helps!

Musk functionally ran the US government for 6 months last year and managed to: increase spending, slash services, kill 100,000s, and help nurture both Ebola & Screwworms. Yet somehow no one mentions this when they talk about the company he is going to take public this week.

It's not you, it's the economy. Organizations pay UX pros because we make business impacts that matter. Ryan Scott presents it beautifully in this video from Hatch Conference: How Macroeconomics Shape Your Design Career.

I think the best reason not to argue with or participate in discourses about bad takes and inane opinion articles is that they all start from some right wing billionaire funded outrage media pipeline that exists to get you to react exactly like that. Guard your time and attention from these vampires

Gerontocracy is how I still occasionally see people talk about AOC being too "young" and "inexperienced" for a presidential run despite the fact that in 2028 she will be 39 and have spent a quarter of that life as a US congressional member sitting on 5 different oversight and finance committees.

this is such a great encapsulation of what the various factions of the reactionary right want. i might add that they envision themselves as slave masters and the rest of us, in one way or another, as their slaves.

so many of the problems we try to solve with code could so much better be solved with improved communication & business processes, but that involves collaborating with other humans and most organizations have such a low opinion of said humans that they will build another bloated shitty tool instead.

If we actually want to appreciate moms, we should be providing free childcare, healthcare, and guaranteed income for stay-at-home parents to put more money in families’ pockets and ensure no SAHP is reliant on a partner for their economic security. Idk I think that’s better than 15% off a vacuum.

A good cautionary tale for when someone claims that trusting data analysis done with an LLM is good because it’s “objective.” In this example, Copilot apparently decided to ignore the data it was given and just run with all the subconscious biases its (human-made) training data inevitably gave it.

There's actually old Protestant theological thinking tangled up in here ("salvation by faith alone" --> what's in my heart is what matters) which here conflates inner state + outer action. Are those bones racist?!? Which lines up perfectly w/power, accountability, maintaining status quo ofc
