It is a good strategy, but more importantly, it gives people the agency to choose what platforms and protocols they want to use while still finding the communities they need to. I wrote about it a couple years ago:

I ranted on about how the atmosphere is making a lot of progress on dreams and paths the fediverse has been working on for many years. @wafrn.net and @anew.social are both showing a middle path that can be taken that bridges both ecosystems. I would love to see more attempts in this direction.

If 5-10 atproto devs who've launched an on-protocol product or infrastructure service and have active users met about private/permissioned data every 2 weeks for a couple months, I'm pretty sure we could crack it. We'd just have to get along first and enforce some community guidelines 🙂

so new updates on map.sky.boo, added "adult cluster" toggle. these are some experimental maybe not quite 100% accurate labels for clusters seemingly focused on adult content and for @norvid-studies.bsky.social , you can now toggle a feature in settings that makes you the center of the entire world
