This is the biggest attack on free speech since the McCarthy era but it also has significantly less popular consensus behind it than the second Red Scare. It's being done on behalf of a minority faction led by the most unpopular president in modern history. Organizing against this can win.

What we are witnessing is an outright abuse of power. This administration is attacking critics and using fear as a weapon to silence anyone who would speak out. Media corporations — from television networks to newspapers — are capitulating to these threats.

The last political column I was allowed to write in the @washingtonpost.com was a criticism of Obama. His people took issue with my piece, but we were respectful. Now he is tweeting in support of me. This is how free political speech and respect for debate *actually works*. Or used to work.

All this while the wealthy use their power to influence policy and suppress organizing. They block efforts that would shift resources toward the public good. They lobby for tax cuts. They weaken labor protections. All while they shape the rules in their favor.

The richest 400 stole $1.2T this year alone. Their wealth comes from hoarding, stock buybacks, and forcing us to pay more while earning less. The minimum wage is frozen, prices rise, and workers suffer. This system exploits us so the wealthy can live in comfort.
