The politics of punishment is for losers and creeps and we're throwing that in the garbage where it belongs. The politics of care is for winners and heroes and that's how we're fucking doing things from now on.

Let's make a promise here, friends... we ARE going to abolish ICE. Not REFORM it. ABOLISH it. And we're going to put that massive budget back into funding all the things that actually HELP people.

Children sometimes walk the length of entire countries to reach a parent waiting in the U.S. They're here to reunite with their family. It's all but impossible to imagine the burden that this operation will place on children who will feel forced to make this terrifying choice.

It's already much harder to be released to a sponsor under this administration and many age-out when they turn 18, often to adult ICE custody. There had long been imperfect but well-meaning bright lines between the shelter network and ICE; sources tell me that line is increasingly blurred.

Shelters that house unaccompanied minors are bracing for "Freaky Friday," the start of an ICE operation that will first issue letters to children, seeking to pressure them to return to the countries they've fled in exchange for a cash payment. If they decline, their parents will be targeted by ICE.

Exhorting children and then threatening their parents with violence is surely pro-family policy, right? 😡

“Democrat-aligned” also sounds SO bad, recall that the president specifically said he will never say “Democratic” and that he prefers “Democrat party” because it sounds “lousy”. Frustrating that his term has basically become the default.

The state health departments themselves receive hundreds of millions of dollars from the CDC in grants and cooperative agreements. States would have to majorly shift their fiscal policies to even come close to replacing what will be lost.

This assumes that state and local public health agencies are well funded. They are not. And the regional disparities are stark, so interstate collaboration will almost certainly drift towards those states that have better resources.
