Alright so theres a valid DAV crit going around- and im not trying to squash that- but I wanted to give some ✨Context✨ on why some things are the way they are because sometimes people have legal obligations. Some of this is already known if you look, but I dont know how public. So lets talk PULP🧵

As a side- this is my understanding of events based on my time on the council and private interviews from devs that wanted to tell their story (and have given me permission to share parts) So lets start the scene- Darrah is on Anthem hoping doing so will get DA4 people, meanwhile DA4 has Goldman.

Goldman and then BW CEO Hudson makes DA4 a multiplayer game, with Goldman directing this new games tone to be And I quote “Pulp-y”. Those cheesy pulp fiction novels, grand ideas done in goofys ways. This was his vision for DA.

Anthem launches, Council forms. We had a whole year under Goldman, and in those few meetings was a lot of him trying to convince us that DA was always pulp! And i see where he was coming from- see the MOTA DLC for DA2. But what DA does that pulp does NOT is take itself seriously.

“What did you say to object then, Caitie?” Honestly? Not a lot. Because it was all so vague we had no idea what he was trying to get across. I then and still do trust the DA writing team. I thought this pulp thing was cute marketing buzz words like the rest of the presentations at the time. 🤷‍♀️

Im told in the back the “pulp” mandate was chaos and not the direction Weekes or Epler wanted to take the series, but they didnt have the power to stop it. So eventually Goldman is sacked, and Corinne comes in and kicks ass. Under her, we are back to single player, and shes down to kick the “pulp”

However- the damage is done. There is too much progress on the game to do a full rewrite for it, even though they do HEAVY rewrites for it. The threat of a VO strike (awhile before it actually happened!) also causes crunch for the writing team. Its a fucking mess!

So- in conclusion, should that plot point have been added and expanded on? Yes! But would it have been done correctly under the “pulpy” mandate? Probably not!!!!! But also the team tried their best and couldn’t get it to work- which we can see in multiple cut dialogue bits from the files.

And more one bit while im pissy: On the rumor that the ME team “saved” the last act of DAV- they only “saved” it because the ME team was given a huge budget to work with- something the DAV team begged to have for the rewrites and move to single player but nahhh fuck em i guess 🤷‍♀️
