I feel grateful and fortunate to have international students in my lab, as well as numerous international collaborators and colleagues. You all make my science better. It pains me to think of the anxiety this causes all of you. I hope that universities come together and fight for what is right.

Psych friends: If you wanted to identify a group of people to survey before and after they move from one geographic location to another, how would you go about it? We could spend a small fortune trying to prescreen in Prolific or MTurk, but maybe there's a better way? WWYD?

All the folks trying to erase “systemic racism” out of their grant apps or who think they can just pivot their research agenda are the ones who jumped on the bandwagon in 2020. 🤦🏾‍♀️

The attack on DEI shows why liberals should stop arguing about "strategic" use of language forever. DEI stands for three uncontroversial virtues that most every American accepts, and the right still turned it into a vile slur. It doesn't matter what you say - they will poison it because YOU said it.

This is also why I think it is a mistake for universities and corporations to simply re-brand DEI policies. They need to defend the underlying principles (integration is good, diversity makes us better) rather than trying to outrun a fascist assault that will be trained on the re-brand

My take on effective vs ineffective tactics on boycotts, protests, etc: Maybe due to working with students, or living in conservative area, I'm reluctant to dismiss most political action as ineffective or performative because if it means something to that person then it means something.

It doesn't feel entirely coincidental that last year FL (among other states) instituted post-tenure review guidelines requiring faculty to obtain federal funding to keep their jobs... and then made federal funding for certain kinds of research illegal.

Under fascism, no one is safe. Universities stayed quiet as the admin targeted DEI & foreign aid, censored research, etc. Now, they face devastating cuts to indirect cost rates, threatening research & operations. Silence won’t protect institutions. It won’t protect people; it never does.

There are far too many grifting ~DEI practictioners~ out there who charge thousands of dollars so you can sit through that one Diversity Day episode of The Office in real time. It’s very bad But if your reaction to that kind of thing is “Resegregating public society is good, actually,” you’re worse

Pete Hegseth isn’t DEI. Daniel Penny isn’t DEI. That’s not what DEI is. They’re just grossly unqualified for their jobs and add no value that any replacement legacy job applicant wouldn’t bring. So stop saying “it’s DEI” like it’s a clever commentary on the situation. It’s not.

The lack of humanity in this message is astounding. No acknowledgment of how devastating this is for scholars working in these areas. No affirmation of our community's willingness to defend and uplift marginalized people. No reassurance, no care, no support. Shameful.

Some people’s research will be flagged and then will move on with clarification. Other people’s research will be flagged and… it’s done. The differences in who those people are will not be random.

If you wanted no leaks you should have gone into Settings -> Security -> Configure privacy & security -> Privacy options -> Other -> Configure -> Media interface and clicked “Disallow.” The Leak setting is on by default but we understand your privacy is important so we’ve made it easy to opt out

Reminder that it’s the same program officers, same reviewers, same values, norms, and priorities. We still are our community no matter what they tell us who to exclude. We can still prioritize diversity, inclusion, equity, and access.
