Rain & Shine Carlos Alcaraz rolled his ankle early in the opening set and looked like he might be on his way to retiring from the match. But, a fortunately-timed rain delay allowed the Spaniard some extra time to recover, going on to cruise past Sebastian Baez, 6-4, 6-2.

A Second Helping She dropped two more games than last time, but the result is the same for Cristina Bucsa in Beijing. The Spaniard repeats her Wimbledon victory over Donna Vekic, winning 6-2, 6-4, to reach the 2nd round.

Joint Sparks Up After cracking the top 100 last season, Maya Joint has spent 2025 proving she belongs much, much higher in the rankings. After reaching the semis last week in Seoul, the Aussie powers ahead in Beijing with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Andorran qualifier Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva.

Rested and Ready After retiring mid-match at both Cincinnati and Toronto, and then going out in the 2nd round at the US Open, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is looking good in Beijing. The Spaniard sweeps past Camilo Ugo Carabelli, 6-1, 6-3, to face Daniil Medvedev or Cameron Norrie in the 2nd round.

Zhu Zips Along After reaching her second ITF final of the year a couple weeks ago, Zhu Lin steps up to a much... much bigger stage in Beijing. The Chinese veteran handles the transition just fine, rolling past Moyuka Uchijima, 6-1, 6-3.

TIL: Moyuka Uchijima trains in Guangzhou at the same club as Zhu Lin. They practice together almost every day. What's the benefit of playing someone you know so well? "It means you don't need to do a lot of homework," Zhu Lin laughed.

Thrice as Nice For just the 3rd time this year, Terence Atmane clears the opening round at an ATP event. (Of course, one of those times he made the semifinals at an ATP Masters event.) The Frenchman takes out Zhang Zhizhen, 6-4, 6-2, to reach round 2 in Beijing.

Ella Enchanted It's all coming together for Ella Seidel. After a steady climb toward the top 100 all year, the German finally broke through last week after making the quarterfinals in Seoul. This week, her outstanding Asian swing continues, defeating Magdalena Frech, 7-5, 6-3.

Kartal Coasts Through Sonay Kartal didn't hit anywhere near as many winners as Alycia Parks. But, more importantly, she didn't hit anywhere as many unforced errors either. Kartal allows the American to overhit herself right out of the match,winning 6-3, 6-2.

Eala Eases Through The top seed sails through in Jingshan. Alexandra Eala sweeps past Japan's Mei Yamaguchi, 6-0, 6-3, to reach the quarterfinals. Eala could crack the top 50 by taking the title this week.

A Seed Survives Wooboy! That was a close one! After four straight seeded players bit the dust in Tokyo, Taylor Fritz snaps the streak. But juuuuust barely. Last week's Laver Cup hero goes the distance to get past Gabriel Diallo, winning 4-6, 6-3, 7-6³, to stay alive.

Sun Setter Sure. Lulu Sun threw in 8 more unforced errors than her opponent, 17yo wildcard Wu Ru Xi. (28 to 20) But she also pounded 21 more winners. (26 to 5) And that's how the New Zealander ends up with a commanding 6-3, 6-0 win to reach the quarterfinals in Jingshan.

Big Win in Beijing Alexandre Muller hasn't had a LOT of wins in the last few months. But he's definitely gotten some big ones. The Frenchman topples Karen Khachanov, 4-6, 7-6⁵, 6-4, to add to his list of major conquests in 2025 which also includes Jiri Lehecka, Arthur Fils, and Alexander Zverev.
