When we model giving feedback, setting up in-class workshops, and splitting students into different pair and group dynamics, these are the forms of community we are seeking to instruct them in. Not every task has a carrot or a stick. Some are just about the complicated work of being together.

There are so many tasks that are onerous but (when done well) express a deep sense of care and community. Annual performance evaluations, letters of rec, and peer reviews are generally unremunerated acts of care and trust for one’s community. I think it’s telling that AI has targeted those tasks.

I'm gonna repeat my comment. Talking about nonexistent "super intelligent" machines is like talking about the Cookie Monster rather than corporations creating real things causing harm. A non existent machine god bringing apocalypse or utopia is a framing that is harmful. Period.

Occasionally reminded that Georgia added a “post tenure review” process bc they were so certain that professors became deadweight once they had job security, and all the outcomes have proven JUST THE OPPOSITE! People work harder and in more complex ways when they feel secure in their employment.

I feel like the first step of building something better and more equitable is to remove every decision maker that complied in advance (and honestly probably a lot more elsewhere). The same folks can’t be in charge again

My probably unpopular take: In the wake of the Dept of Ed ruling, DEI initiatives *should not* be rebuilt or re-institutionalized as they were before. Such initiatives overwhelmingly functioned as figleaves for elites to pretend to care about social justice while consolidating power for the wealthy.
