Playing some retro RPGs from my childhood and stumbled upon the sword fighting frog dandy who, in retrospect, wormed his way into the DNA of so many of my D&D characters.

This year I managed anxiety by diving into reading in a huge way using the only medium I have time for. I made it my goal to read 50 audiobooks, and at some point it became clear I was flying through things while cleaning, cooking, commuting, exercising. So I doubled the goal, and I finished 101.

The very last Calvin and Hobbes strip was published 30 years ago today.

I love to see this angle on textiles showing up in more places! It's core to my argument about how running a Textile Makerspace is digital humanities. Humanities students especially are so scared of failure, and it's less intimidating when you start with thread before moving to computers. #DHmakes

My hot take after watching Home Alone this year is that it is two very different movies that were stitched together - one is a lowkey romantic comedy and the other is a full-on horror short film.

My full statement in response to the Youngkin-majority University of Virginia Board of Visitors naming a new university president in the final days of his administration:

Good to see that the Board and newly-named President have begun the long process of rebuilding trust by *checks notes* dropping a demand that we all get along at 3:30PM on the Friday before holiday break.

the message sent dropping this late on a Friday afternoon right before most of UVA is effectively shut down for two weeks could not be more clear. they know this is deeply unpopular and completely illegitimate.

"Together, we will move forward with unity, purpose, and pride in this extraordinary institution." - truly trying to will into existence an alternate reality than the one they have created.

"The book she wrote helped me." "I loved their class." "He stood up for me in a faculty meeting." That's what we're talking about, right? People who are courageous, and generous, and committed to their values. In some ways, being a professor makes it easier to work this way. In others it does not.

Ok look we know that meritocracy does not exist. Academic performance is primarily an indicator of wealth and security. Hiring committees use all kinds of problematic proxies for value. STILL when you fail to succeed it hurts as if the meritocracy existed and you just weren't good enough.
