It's here! Now that I've given this talk in person, I'm making the YouTube version available to all. Share with anyone who might want to know that "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed" used to be "Two Little [N-word]s Lyin' in Bed" and why "monkeys" is still racist.

Neurotypical people love to say: "The rule is what the rule says and it means what it says, but it doesn't mean what it says you'd have to be stupid to think that."

It's not to everyone's taste, but I appreciate the hell out of a male writer who is able to have all kinds of outrageous and nasty content without punching down. Anti fascist writing doesn't need to be HR approved. Some stand up comedian bros could take a lesson.

Found out that as a student I can swing by the school of music to practice on their grand pianos when lessons aren't happening. Dope! 🎹

Libraries really should be taking advantage of the GenAI push to brand ourselves differently. And it wouldn't be a bad idea to make sure we actually ARE a better information experience. Whole lot of coasting happening on that one.

Working on the most difficult middle bit of a piano goals piece. Soon as I finish taming this bit, the whole thing should go smoothly. 🎹 So close!

Preteen boy earlier this summer: Where are your books on puberty? Me: Right over here. Dad: Why do you want a book on THAT? Boy: Because I'm GOING THROUGH IT!! (Dad was supportive about the checkout.)

Yes, the number of times I've heard parents veto a kid's book selection as "too hard" -OR- "too easy" is too high. Just get some more books in case?

Pet peeve: referring to direct public service staff as "frontline staff." We are not engaged in trench warfare against our patrons.

Taking a class on strategic planning and, hoo boy, are some of these public library plans we're looking at missing the point of every aspect beyond patting themselves on the back for being essential.

Public service workers are NOT entitled to a work environment free of threats and harassment. We're entitled to a work environment where threats and harassment have consequences.

if you only looked at the use of “working class” by people who opine on the democratic party’s “need to win back the working class” you would never suspect that every historically feminized profession is working-class

I was checking in a series called "I don't want to..." which were all about behavior problems with kids. In this one the kid doesn't want to give people kisses even though this embarrasses her mother. The lesson is that kids SHOULD give kisses to people who want them. It's how you show love. WTF! 🤢

There's a similarity in asking a patron if -- instead of a paper book from the collection -- they'd accept a digital version right now or an interlibrary loan next month. Most dismiss these suggestions, rudely even. But others are ~excited~ at the possibilities this opens up.

Expecting to be seen as tech saavy because you prompt GenAI is the same as expecting to be seen as a programmer for playing a video game.

These Maine librarians are helping patrons resist AI and Big Tech
Despite breathless reporting on how AI is going to change the world, Hannah Cyrus, a Bangor librarian, said that, in her experience, most library patrons aren’t finding it helpful.

Push your library boards and other advisory/governing structures to formally adopt this as guidance like so many of them do with Library Bill of Rights.

I don't like the work culture of saying out loud when you think someone does good work and making written records when you think someone does bad work. "How is this employee?" According to the files, bad.

There's a McDonald's I go to that would often mean one person panhandling after the order. Lately, it means people standing right at the order sign talking over the ordering process then following until the order window. Then more people squeezed against the wall between windows.

All the parents in the US have to unite against the use of AI in schools like some people unite over shit like drag queen story times. AI will make a generation of children mentally stunted while drag queen story times add whimsy to literacy. It’s time to wake up.

Library "Science" still seems like misnomer to me, considering what is taught to and what is practiced by the vast majority of people with that degree. Professional and "science" are different concepts.
