As an American public librarian, I know that hate speech is free speech. But speaking hate does NOT enhance freedom of speech for others. In fact, it often has the intended result of suppressing other people's free speech, such as with book bans, school topic bans, and the use of chosen names.

To my great surprise, “Year of the Dog” hit the USA Today’s bestseller list at 130 a couple weeks back. This was my very first novel, published back in 2006(?). While it did receive a starred review, it didn’t do much else. It has never made any bestseller list…until now, almost 20 years later.

Being a parent is having hard conversations. “Where do babies come from?” “Is grandpa going to get better?” “Why is that person sleeping on the sidewalk?” “Am I going to die someday?” If a person is unwilling to have the hard conversations of life with their kids, then they’re not good parents.

I had a fair bit of firearms training as a kid, and back then it was all about "never point a gun at something you don't intend to kill" and "know your target and what's beyond." Seeing all these police videos of them pointing a gun at people while shouting instructions makes me molten.
