There's a man from Ontario who built himself a houseboat and is currently sailing the Great Lakes to Chicago and plans (I guess after a long downriver journey) to sail from the Gulf of Mexico to Africa and honestly, godspeed buddy.

Thanksgiving is the most American holiday, even moreso than 4th of July IMO, because it's simultaneously grounded in a mythology that papers over the horrors that lie in our history while also celebrating the very best of our mixed culture despite being constantly encroached on by consumerism.

These workers are harvesting celery. They use a curved blade to cut and trim the bunches. It is often packaged right in the field by another crew of workers.

Fresh herbs (whether sold fresh or processed by drying) are delicate. They are often hand harvested, like this parsley in Ventura County, CA.

Here is the poblano chile harvest in Santa Clara County. The workers harvest the peppers, then take their full buckets over to a conveyor belt and dump them on it. A worker then directs them into different bins.

This video is from this summer’s peak cherry picking season in WA. If workers work super fast they can make extra money during these 4-6 weeks. This worker reported being paid $4.50/22 lb bucket. He is very fast and averaged 55-65 buckets/day. It was around 100° that day.

Turnips (like these in central CA) are either harvested by hand or unearthed by machine and then cleaned and sorted by hand. These hand harvest workers were being paid by the bucket of trimmed turnips. The yellow tag is their tally to keep track.

This is a sweet potato harvest in Merced County CA. Workers began working at 4am to avoid extreme heat. They sort the potatoes and distinguish their size and shape while the sun is rising.

Green beans are durable enough to be largely harvested by machines and then sorted and cleaned for quality by hand. The specialty varieties are more likely to be harvested by hand in a process similar to the work in this video. (Video shows snap peas from Salinas, CA.)

There are two methods for cranberry harvest- wet method and dry method. Pictured is the ‘wet harvest’ method where the cranberry bog is flooded and the plants are shaken to dislodge the submerged berries, which float. (Fun fact: in a flooded bog the workers become high ground for the spiders.)

A farm worker shared this from where he's harvesting romaine lettuce. The crew has 26 workers. One group harvests the lettuce, the next group bags it and the last group puts it in the boxes.

I will say: I tend to like a Dutch berry pie better than a Dutch apple since the crumble soaks up the berry juice. Not as pretty a pie, but a deeply satisfying experience.

My relatively small family has always had an embarrassment of pies for Thanksgiving. Minimum count: 1. Pumpkin Pie (it's a must) 2. Some kind of Dutch fruit pie. Usually apple. 3. Maple pecan pie 4. Some variety of cream- or custard-based pie.

Gender-affirming care saves lives

Today, after months of requests, I toured the Broadview ICE Processing Facility. I want to share what I saw. The facility has no food vendor, no medical care, and detainees have to use toilets in the middle of shared cells. These are in no way suitable conditions to be holding anyone — period.

One thing about me is that I am absolutely petty enough to screenshot error-ridden screeds against the public education system and then edit in corrections, but not petty enough to actually post them.

Happily, I was the only child of blue-ish collar parents in the 1990s IN THE MIDWEST so most of my Thanksgiving memories are drowned in dairy or involve marshmallows. Also a minimum of four pies for our family of three.

This morning my kid was an acolyte for the first time and did an amazing job. It's always a good day when we get to worship together as a family, but there's something really special about working together in the chancel. ⚓ Did you touch pews today? What brought you joy?
