The most heartbreaking part of my job is knowing that some of my students have never had a safe space. A place. A person. A point in life. Genuine concern is suspicious because they look for ulterior motives. It’s an automatic reaction.

My students struggle to self-regulate. Any change in routine can be overstimulating. They all completed the work today. It was sweltering but I didn’t have any major incidents. A win is a win. 🥳🎉

One of my new students told me about his nan. He calls the stories ‘nan-ecdotes’. It was a hard week. This is my little positive from today. Sometimes I get glimpses of the children they used to be.

That was a day. I feel guilty when I use severe behaviour sanctions because the children don’t have lives outside of where I work. It’s a constant balancing act for fair, honest and compassionate.

Lessons with my challenging classes tomorrow? High blood glucose all day? Throw low bg in! It’s for the plot innit. I love seasonal changes. Every year.

I work with troubled children. Some more than others. The small moments matter. A simple ‘thank you’. Meeting expectations. Reduced profanities and challenging apathy. A game of Uno. Most of my students are working well below their chronological ages. Small wins. Small positives.

I’m not a musical gal but I have some exceptions. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Hamilton.

Anthony Stewart Head’s Giles was a guiding light and a troubled mentor. The multifaceted figure was the perfect character in Buffy. In a world of metaphorical ‘school and adolescence are hell’, he is important. He was a paternal figure for the people who needed it.

Every time there is a ‘new’ concept/social norm in media, I think about how Buffy did it first. Strong female characters? Buffy. Found family trope? Buffy. Vampires with hearts of gold? Buffy. Silent episode? Buffy. LGBTQIA+ couple? Buffy.

Season four has strengths but I forgot the major weakness for me. Riley Finn. A character so bland he could be flour. 😑

I absolutely adore season one tweed Giles. I have a soft spot for magic shop Giles. Season four dark sarcasm Giles is my favourite though. Every. Time. Yes, I know he was in the middle of an existential crisis and he wasn’t officially a watcher BUT that version lives in my heart.
