A Canadian man becomes the 11th person to be cured of HIV after a stem cell transplant. Note: while this is good news (every case adds to our understanding) the procedure is too dangerous to be applied to anyone not in imminent danger of death. There is still no available, acceptable cure for HIV.

On this day in 1999, the Admiral Duncan gay bar in London’s Soho was hit by a nail bomb, planted by a far right terrorist, It followed similar attacks in Brixton and Brick Lane. Three people were killed and more than 70 injured. The fight against homophobia is a fight for our safety.

Today is the anniversary of my HIV diagnosis. I was 30 and had lost many friends to AIDS. The doctor told me that with treatment I could expect to live another twenty years. That was 28 years ago. HIV changed. Tell everyone.

In my experience, the gays who were active in the gay rights movement support trans rights now. The gays who stayed home and scolded the activists for stirring things up are the ones who are now trying to ditch trans people.

Stock is a charlatan & Stonewall is only one, small, part of our communities. And, fuck off, we weren’t on our knees and pleading for tolerance. We were, fighting and angry; and remain so. The last decade of transphobia has shown our political establishment are, at best, fair weather friends.

In 1999 I conceived and co-curated Pride and Prejudice at the Museum of London. It was the first exhibition about LGBTQ lives at a major UK museum. Curatorial independence from the Government is vital for museums to reflect the communities they serve. Reform’s election pledge is chilling.

To correct the record: The gay rights movement I was a part of in the 1980s and 90s was not aiming for ‘toleration’. Mere acceptance was not enough. How would that help the isolated queer kid? No. We wanted that child to know they would be loved and celebrated just as they were.

It’s been 10 years since Prince died and the world lost a musical genius. He was one of the first major artists to address AIDS in his music. Sign O’ the Times, released in 1987, as AIDS devastated communities in the US and around the world, referred to it as ‘a big disease with a little name’.

From the artist who brought you Sex in 1992, Madonna’s still too hot for some apparently. Unless it’s me they think is being sexually suggestive.

Madonna’s an icon who knows her iconography. So when her album cover presents her as a pink triangle I’m sure it’s a nod to the symbol assigned to homosexuals in the WWII concentration camps. The triangle was reclaimed by gays in the 70s / 80s and used powerfully by the AIDS activist groups ACT-UP.

Media outlets should spend less time writing about the “legitimate grievances” of people who loathe immigration and more time addressing how racist reporting about migrants, Muslims, Black folks, and other racialised communities has cultivated the fascism we are enduring today. Just saying.
