Is it right to describe someone as ‘openly gay’, rather than just ‘gay’? Here’s my rule: if it relates to a longstanding title or achievement, using ‘openly’ acknowledges the history of homophobia that resulted in many not being able to be open about their sexuality. Other times, it’s unnecessary.

A research project I’m working on now has what we believe is the largest recorded cohort of neurodiverse HIV+ participants. If we can recruit a handful more to this study, seeking info about interactions between healthcare providers and people with HIV, we’ll be able to make valid comparisons.

When I was at drama college in the 1990s I was told that being openly gay would limit my career, that nobody who was gay could make it as a leading man. Sexiest Man Alive may seem a trivial title but for it to awarded to a defiantly open gay actor still feels significant. Well done Jonathan Bailey.

I’m sad to hear that Prunella Scales has died. She and Tim were neighbours to my family. As a child I used to go to their parties and serve food and drinks. Years later we were in a film, Breaking the Code, together. She was wise and witty and kind, still able to charm even as dementia took hold.

I just filled out a medical history form for my dentist. It asked whether I’d ever had HIV/AIDS. 😡 HIV and AIDS are not the same thing. It’s lazy to present them as if they are. When anyone (but medical providers especially) does so they contribute to the two being perceived as interchangeable.
