I was 17 when I met my first trans person. I think she was 14 or 15 at the time. She was the younger sibling of the boy I was madly in love with - and secretly dating. She told me she thought she was a girl. I believe I was the first person she’d told. 1/9

I knew I was gay when I was 15. It was 4 years before I was ready to admit it. I was diagnosed with HIV when I was 30. It took 14 years before I was ready for everyone to know. Closets are constraints. Authenticity is a superpower.

Today my beloved companion Domzee turns 20 - an astonishing age for a cat to reach. He’s frail now, deaf and partially blind, every day is about making sure he’s comfortable - but I’ll always be grateful for the years we’ve shared together.

Giorgio Armani dressed Jodie Foster for her 1992 Oscar win for Silence of the Lambs, acing the challenge with a pale pink trouser suit, complemented with an AIDS awareness ribbon. He also designed the dress she wore to the 2013 Golden Globes where she first publicly ‘came out’ (sort of).

The first funeral I went to was a gay man's funeral (Ronald Federico) who died of AIDS in 1989 when I was 5. The most painful memory is not the funeral... in hindsight it was him telling me I wouldn't get sick if I hugged him. He was scared of the stigma, and at 5 I just wanted to hug my friend.

When Princess Diana shook the hand of a man with AIDS it made headlines around the world. That image helped to dispel some of the ignorance and fear around HIV. It came at a time when people with HIV were often shunned, when allyship with gay people was still exceptional. It made a difference.

The test of being a corporate #LGBTQI ally isn’t whether you’ll add rainbow colours to your logo once a year. The test is, will you stand up for all of us when we are attacked? Will you distance yourself from those who demean us? Will you still be our ally when it’s no longer convenient?

I think The Roses may be my favourite film so far this year. Savage, laugh out loud funny and beautifully acted.
