We need a thread on broadcast launch cakes. Here's an old favourite, from the party at North Hessary Transmitter Tower for the launch of Radio 1 FM.

The interesting point for me is the likes of York & parts of North Yorkshire are shown as covered by Emley Moor. In later maps this was downgraded as "supplementary" & the official transmitter was Bilsdale. In reality EM was generally used in N Yorks if at all possible with Bilsdale as last resort.

Recently I was talking to find colleagues and said I that I felt like there should be a place for continuity announcers in iPlayer. Think they thought I was mad. But this style of announcement is - in my view - far more effective than putting some bland, generic warning text on screen.

40 YEARS AGO TODAY: maybe the reason this isn't part of the televisual April Fools canon is Channel 4's big idea happened at closedown, not just after the traditional midday cut-off - after all, all of those above were too - but technically on the 2nd.

The Fred Bonfield slide collection shows technological evolution at Television House. Here's an early set-up for Mitch, the Associated-Rediffusion clock (left), and a more advanced version (right) from later.

The Fred Bonfield slide collection has thrown up some interesting things. For instance, it's split in two, one box from Rediffusion, one smaller box from Thames: this is in the Kingsway/Wembley box, but there is a clue that it's probably Teddington.

That most erudite of networks, BBC Radio 3, gets into the spirit of April Fools today in 1972.
