Matt Upson on the BBC commentary has called the Egyptian goalkeeper 'Ryan' and I think earlier referenced "Turkey's" centre backs, rather than Egypt's. Curious.

Dan Taylor's review of the Ronaldo film - over ten years ago - predicted exactly this: "a level of self-obsession that makes one wonder how he will cope now he is approaching the age [...] when the powers gradually start to decline.

That might be one of the most perfectly constructed goals of all time. Spain turned Austria into bowling pins and manufactured a chance on the penalty spot from a cross with no outfield player within 15 metres. In American terms, that was a completely uncontested layup.

I'm an idiot / not (one of) the best footballer(s) of all time, but 1) we get occasional reminders that Messi has never been a very good penalty taker and 2) I'm surprised he's never got *much* better at it. The GK-dependent switch made him better, but if the keeper doesn't move that should go in.

Again, once the question 'do they want to do remigration?' has been (essentially) answered affirmatively, it's important to move onto the next question: 'how?' Because there simply isn't a way to do that which doesn't result in concentration camps.

Friendly reminder that a very good test of "is this person a dickhead" is whether they mock Romelu Lukaku. You do not mock him, you pay hommage to a remarkable man with a preposterous career. This man who scores crucial World Cup goals (plural) without even needing to touch the ball...

As someone who regularly criticizes crime reporting, I want to highlight the good stuff when it happens. Like this. No equivocating in the post. Headline is clear. First paragraph blunt. Doesn’t quote the admin until paras 12-13, and explicitly notes that it’s evidence-free blather.

Using generative AI for imagery is **directly harmful** to artists, graphic designers, photographers etc. This isn't a vague moral argument: this is just normal, standard theft, except at a completely new scale and social acceptability. We need to reverse that.

Do I have this right? Sikh guy stabs a kid. His brother calls police, reporting a hate crime. Police arrive and arrest alleged perpetrator (and cuff him). When they realize he is the victim, they uncuff him and render aid. Victim's wounds were already fatal. Perpetrator is arrested and convicted.

, part 3 in an occasional series. There is by now an established standard response to AI-generated art, best exemplified by responses to AI-generated novels: if you can't be bothered to write it, why should I bother to read it? I propose extending this attitude to advertising.
