Deep in the Naliboki Forest, Tuvia built a real community... a kitchen, bathhouse, hospital, soap factory, bakery, school for 60 children and a jail. They called it Jerusalem. Musicians played at Jewish festivals. Everyone had a job. "It was an embarrassment if you weren't working," Tuvia said. 7/10

By 1943 the group had grown to 700 people. The Nazis launched a massive manhunt... 20,000 troops combing the forest. Soviet commanders ordered Tuvia to abandon his civilians and fight. He refused. He led everyone deeper into the swamp until the Germans gave up. Every single person made it out. 6/10

Here's what set Tuvia apart. He took everyone. Not just fighters. Old women, children, the sick... anyone who made it to the forest got in. Other commanders thought this was madness. Tuvia didn't care. "I would rather save one old Jewish woman than kill ten German soldiers." 5/10

Most people would have hidden and hoped. Tuvia did something different. He started sending word into the ghettos... come to the forest, there's safety here. It was a hard sell. Forest winters are brutal. But people were being killed anyway. Slowly at first, then faster, they came. 4/10

When Germany invaded in 1941, the killing started fast. Einsatzgruppen moved through the region murdering Jews by the thousands. In December, Tuvia's parents were killed in a massacre at the Nowogródek ghetto. He and his brothers fled into the forest with thirty people and almost nothing. 3/10
