sorry to max, I have so many thoughts: I think a lot of people approach criticism as Good/Bad laypeople and don't realize that critics generally are showing their work for their opinion (arguments) or not even discussing good/bad, instead, "let's talk about something specific beyond that framework"

THIS Critic me absolutely wants to talk about media and what it is doing, but those things do not detract from enjoying the game or thinking the game devs are people who do good work

Tagteaming off of this, one of the most valuable brain nuggets you can use to help sort out the difference between the two is to learn when you have instances of "This isn't good BUT I actually really like it". Try thinking about why both of those halves can be true at the same time.

respectfully: no. develop your own taste, absolutely, but own it. it's fine to think that popular thing is bad. it's fine to not have an opinion too, but i see statements like this one all the time and i just want to push back a bit: there's nothing wrong with having the courage of your convictions.

as a lifelong critic, my best advice on this topic: practice thinking from the perspective of other ppl. consider where they're coming from, why a piece might resonate w them. this will help you differentiate between "not for me" and "it isn't good". be kind with the former, don't fear the latter!

100% this, a critical eye, in a lot of cases, comes from taking a gut feeling about a work and putting words to it. leaving it at "it just isn't for me" means you're not exercising that critical muscle out of a misguided politeness.
