I wrote about a book about the Republicans who stood up to Nixon. It came out in 2018, and I would often disappoint people who showed up to my book talks when I warned them that history wouldn't repeat itself.

I've been hesitant to fully embrace the 1968 vs. 2024/2025 comparisons since Vietnam had a much greater impact on American society than the ongoing genocide in Gaza. However, it's now clear that the fissures within the Dem Party are almost as intense as those of the late 1960s.

Gallup has Trump's approval rating at 37%, the lowest of his second term. They had him at 34 in January 2021, but other polls had him in the 36-42 range. Based on recent history, it appears that consistently falling below 35 percent is the point of no return.

Unless you count the honeymoon period, a U.S. president hasn't had an approval rating above 60 percent since 2003 (GW Bush) They also haven't gone below 35 percent since January 2009 (GW Bush).
