I want to talk briefly about the implications of using AI in creative work. First of all, we agree so-called "AI" is ruining our society and planet. BUT (yikes right?), AI is also transforming our cognitive relationship to the things we use it for. 1/12

The authors’ conclusions are bunk from the jump because they assume that parameters laid out by Chomsky are valid indicators that show humans uniquely use language. Chomsky fundamentally discounted the actual humanity of language, making Chomskyan tests of humanness a joke.

What this study found is that AI is pretty good at adopting formal linguistic analysis that treats language as a set of disembodied linguistic structures unique to humans, which is not surprising since it relegates the complexity of human language to “performance” outside of the scope of linguistics

Katie's right, but I want to nuance the issue. Students come into college with an understanding of writing that is mechanical and algorithmic. It mistakes mastery of the basic form of an essay for using that form to articulate that point. Part of this is due to the culture around student writing.

Once more for the MagicSchool AI crowd and anybody else using narratives of magic to sell AI to school admin, teachers, and students: “We are doing this because AI is not magic. Behind every algorithm are thousands of hidden workers labelling, training & moderating data under precarious conditions.”

They are attacking a small minority of youth who simply wish to feel safe and that they belong in their school communities. Every child deserves a caring, dignity-affirming space to learn, including transgender youth.

Unquestionably, major policy changes, edicts and directives handed down by the new Trump administration will upend lives. But I've also been struck by the widespread efforts to erase/whitewash history. Stick with me for a pretty shocking series of events from just the past few weeks.

The CSR comm I'm on just pulled all Diversity F grants from the current review cycle. These apps are reviewed alongside (and by the same criteria) as all other F grants. So, instead of helping these trainees, they will actually be punished by having their grant reviews delayed at least 1 cycle !?!?
