While journal publishing has always been deeply problematic, hurting both the pace and trajectory of science, something is happening in this moment that is finally causing the system to crumble under its own weight and cost. 1/

It’s been a tough few weeks. My 10yo daughter was diagnosed with a very rare, aggressive cancer called interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS). I’m reaching out to identify clinicians/patients who have encountered pediatric IDCS or other (non-LCH) dendritic or histiocytic sarcomas cases.

Some of the best ways to take advantage of preprints: share broadly that you posted one but also to send your preprint directly to colleagues who might care and may have missed it. Just as you like to be alerted to research you care about and may not have seen yet, so does everyone else

The most depressing thing about this public access policy discussion is the low agency about what journals will do/permit. They literally work for us & take money for services (existing only by overselling gatekeeping as truth IMO). We act like we aren’t every single aspect of what gives them power

IMO is the sanest thing ever for NIH to say we’re not going to take money from the public for research and let people delay visibility because the journals have everyone (voluntarily) by the gonads.

Eliminating binary decisions only encourages abandoning the journal proxy if you don’t still filter/make discoverable based on editorial decisions. This throws those under the bus those who believed in science judged on substance not stamps. Sadness doesn’t begin to cover this squandered opportunity
