Why didn't TIE Fighters have shields? Was the Empire stupid? There are 2 lines from Rebel pilots referencing "deflectors", ergo they have shields. When the RPG was written in '87, they needed cannon fodder for the heroes, and so TIE Fighters didn't have shields. That's it. That's the whole reason.
