Banned/challenged books are often difficult reads with jarring content, but we can't shield ourselves nor our children from the realities of the world forever - it's better to build empathy and understanding through books, especially by reading books by/about marginalized people.

If I had a band or a label, I would do a punk cover of "No More Kings" from Schoolhouse Rock. And then I would gather a bunch of people to write a whole album of next-generation Schoolhouse Rock songs, with songs about Social Security and Medicaid and NOAA. I am not kidding in the least.

I keep thinking about how before I got my current job I worked at a title I school where there was an incredibly understaffed special education program. In the program was a student whose behavior would regularly cause us to go on a soft lock down in our classrooms 🧵

I’m working on focusing on the things I can control. So, I taught my students how to make zines. Who knows, maybe they’ll need to spread the word about something one day. Many of them chose to write about their opinions related to book banning.

Trans literature (especially indie) is transgressing artificial limits many won’t even acknowledge exist and will inspire, thrill, or maybe reflect something back at you. You really owe it to yourself to read these wonderful authors.

Montgomery County Public Schools comes out and tells Trump to pound sand with his EO telling schools that they have to discriminate against transgender students. This is how you refuse to comply.

On day one Trump's EO said we were harmful to kids. On day two, it said we were dishonorable and disloyal. On day three, it said we were unAmerican. Transgender people have been a part of this country for centuries. We are not going anywhere. Do not comply with these EOs, they are not law.

This is my favorite picture of Stonewall. They knew they were getting arrested just for being LGBTQ+. Yet... they're still here, standing outside of the boarded up Stonewall Inn, smiling as the world was at a fever pitch of hatred against them. I think about it a lot in moments like this.

May the thing with feathers perching in our souls have sharp teeth and bone-crushing jaws.

One of the worst parts of the E.O. from yesterday is the choice to specifically say 19 instead of the typical age barrier of 18. I can’t stop thinking of all the trans youth I’ve worked with where a mantra has been to just make it to 18. I worry about how this might push them over the edge.
