I am happy to announce that we received major funding from Schmidt Sciences under their VICC program to study rapid #Permafrost Thaw Carbon Trajectories (PeTCaT). The 5-year project led by my team @awi.de partners with an international team to quantify how rapid thaw contributes to climate change.

CO₂ removal (CDR) deployments require materials and energy, which emit CO₂. That’s why we talk about net CDR. Even if CDR affects ecosystems, it’s likely minor compared to the significant negative impacts of climate change on ecosystems. So we should focus on the net ecosystem benefits of CDR.

Doug was a NSF program officer for a few of my projects before stepping into his role below. His loss is an example of the many negative impacts. I speak often on the value of collaboration and cost sharing to get the most bang for our buck. Losses like Doug’s work affect everyone in the U.S. 🧪
