I'm putting on another Brisbane LGBT+ and Allies in Tech pub meet: Thursday 13 Nov at The Plough. It's a fun, casual event for drinks, finger food, networking, and good chats with fellow folks in (or interested in) tech. See you there?

Great piece on Jimbocho that captures its old-fashioned appeal:

The book town's residents weigh in on their home topping Time Out magazine's “coolest neighborhoods” list.

Well, if it’s 23 September... YES, THAT’S RIGHT! It’s the 71st anniversary of the hunt for the Gorbals Vampire, in which hundreds of children aged from four to 14, armed with dogs, knives and sharpened sticks went looking for an urban myth

if you want to understand tailoring, you only need to watch mid-century movies, when actors were dressed by tailors, not brands. in the 1944 film cover girl, gene kelly's suit drapes beautifully, moving with him, not against him. collar stays on his neck, even as he dances.

I love this analytical take on video game categorization from Antoine Mayerowitz and Julie Belzanne:
hushcrasher.substack.com/p/taxonomy-o...
Instead of trying to vibe-intuit the definition of an "indie" game, the authors analyzed the data from the perspective of game size and credits length

Very interesting to see the game industry talk about this phenomenon as 'deprofessionalisation'. Definitely more visible now in the wake of all the layoffs, but really this has been unfolding for 15+ years now as both platformisation and gigification.

The 'deprofessionalization of video games' was on full display at PAX East
PAX East felt like a warning: explosively successful games by solo devs and small teams are great, but it could lead to a dearth of vital specialists.

Possibly a dumb question, but now the print mag has worldwide distribution via Antenne Books, does that mean pre-orders are open to us Antipodeans? Or is the worldwide distribution only for over-the-counter sales after release?

I guess like so many tips, this mostly boils down to "show don't tell" but it's especially worth remembering for first person writing that characters don't always know how they feel.

I can't remember the context for this tip, but I'm fairly sure it was a reminder to myself to be less precious about my writing. Even vague feedback you disagree with can be pointing to a real problem.

One of mine! The idea here was that if you sit at your WIP and find nothing's coming, try writing something in the same universe. A pivotal scene from your main character's childhood. A lesser prophecy from your book of prophecies. The sex scene that'll never make it into your PG romance. Anything!
