the sad reality: your favorite local haunts (that indie bookstore with the queer book club, the game shop that hosts tcg nights, the cafe with local art shows, etc) are always teetering on the edge of closure every single month. just a reminder to show these places love whenever you can.

Do not pander. Do not dumb down. Trust your audience to be smarter than you. Trust them to be curious. Don’t erase your own voice for spurious bowing down to factors that bring nothing to the stories you need to tell.

Art matters. And what do we do with things that matter? We protect them. Here is information about H.R. 7661, a US book banning bill that explicitly targets books about trans people, and what you can do right now to help stop it.

Excellent essay from Emily here, and one I couldn't agree with more. While this is about AI and art, there's a larger examination about HOW to approach art. Please read!

ALA is disappointed that the House Committee on Education & Workforce moved forward dangerous federal book banning legislation yesterday. HR 7661 contains vague, confusing, and overly broad language, inviting government censorship. More from ALA:

remember when the IRS put out a a free online tax filing system where you could just do your taxes through the IRS and it was actually well made and was pretty well recieved and then the tax filing industry and Republicans killed it and now you have to use TurboTax again

I think it's pretty important to understand that algorithmically-run platforms have long understood anger and argument drives much more engagement than just showing you stuff you like, and if you find yourself being made to despair at what a platform shows you, that is the system working as intended

if the US government logs these trees at the rate / quantity they're proposing, we'll lose one of the last old-growth forests. there's no coming back from that. if you have five minutes to leave a comment pushing back against the BLM, please do; there's a guide to that below.

The thing about ebooks as a substitute is that it ignores two major needs of teen readers: autonomy (the ability to get a book without going through parents) and community (the ability to pass a book around to all their friends.)
