Absolutely love this. I've read a lot of very clearly defensive work these past few years - like, "I can pick out exactly what Twitter thread this paragraph is responding to" kind of clear - and it's ruined so many books for me. Begging authors to stop writing to criticism.

The insouciance of people in charge of hiring or paying contractors is really galling sometimes. I’m convinced that it comes down to them being employees who continue to collect their paychecks every two weeks whether they do their jobs or not.

I have not giggled or gasped at anything on the television in recent memory as much as I did at The Diplomat on Netflix.
