The President wants to use the military to crack down on Americans who are exercising their 1st Amendment rights to oppose him. I can’t think of a better reason to insist on exercising those rights.

4PM Today (Friday, Sept 26): Protest at the Neil Smith Federal Building in downtown Des Moines in support of Dr Ian Roberts. Dr Roberts was detained by ICE in Des Moines and, apparently, driven to an ICE facility in Council Bluffs.

Just got my copy of the new book by @johnfugelsang.bsky.social. I'm a secular humanist once very active in my state and know first-hand the kind of abuse fundamentalist Christians can inflict. I had a couple of nice interactions with Mr. Fugelsang when I was on Twitter and look forward to this read.

Honestly, folks. As a historian, every day I wonder what new assault on the democratic process awaits us from the executive branch. The revolutionary generation knew that they were living in world-changing times. So are we. We need to live up to this challenge.
