The whole reffing system in England needs root and stem change and the PGMOL needs to be liquidated. Not fit for purpose and for what is supposedly the best league in the world

Far, far to casual from Jack Hughes on that empty net situation. Lazy back hand pass in the middle of the ice. Dumb play

So glad we won on Sunday because this would have driven me insane otherwise. But to your point: seen clips of him completely contradicting himself over very similar incidents. It means they're just going on vibes, rather than actual rules.

Didn't expect anything different from this farce. Howard Webb needs to go, he's not interested in improving match officials - he's a gaslighting grifter whose stealing a living.

This is utter gaslighting 101, it’s shameful, it’s pathetic. There’s now so many clips of this show that we all have the receipts and can quite easily pick out examples of where Howard Webb says exactly the opposite of what he’s previously said. Utter shambles.

The premier league won’t grow up and become a proper global sporting competition as long as PGMOL is in charge of their referees. The Clubs and their supporters deserve better but the league is largely undermined by PGMOL’s incompetence.

Howard Webb will go on TV & tell you a lie that you can easily disprove with the visual evidence right in front of you. And he does this while contradicting his prior comments about similar situations. If anyone at PGMOL remotely cared about their credibility he’d be gone. But they clearly don’t.

Oh boy, Dale Johnson doing PGMOL propaganda today. Says that Gyökeres was not fouled and that it should have been a penalty for Newcastle for the Gabriel "Handball" 🤡

Jamie Redknapp and Shay Given both thought the call should have stood. Whether you think it was a foul or not on replay, it was given on the pitch. It does not seem to come close to meeting the standard for review and overturn.

At best, Jarred Gillett allowed himself to be pushed from a right decision to a wrong one. Spineless.

To the issue of "clear and obvious error" - if the VAR is, as the U.S. announcers said, having to PERSUADE the referee to come around to their view of the call, how can it possibly be a "clear and obvious error?" The very fact that it requires persuasion indicates that it is not clear nor obvious.

Call aside, I don’t like refs being called over to paused screens. Football is flow and context. You can pause a shirt tug and it’ll look like a foul, even if it’s a millisecond. You can pause a slight touch of the ball, but it doesn’t give the player carte blanche from there.

Robbie Earle thinks that the penalty award should have stood. He said it was a foul by Nick Pope and that Gyokeres might have even gone on to get the ball and put it in the net anyway. By the way, if reasonable people disagree about a call, it cannot, by definition, be a clear and obvious error.

I don't know how the ref has seen Saka handle the ball based on his position and the linesman not flagging. Vibes based reffing

The announcers in the U.S. said that the VAR was essentially lobbying the referee to change the call.

The way that penalty incident was dealt with was absolutely re-refereeing by the way. The ref has seen the incident live but they’ve asked him to watch it again 20 times and make a new decision.

I'm not aware of there being any law that says if a player gets a touch of the ball, they can then take a player out. If you trip a player in the box, so that he cannot continue to run to the ball, that's got to be a penalty surely.

Getting a touch on the ball doesn’t always negate a foul. In my biased opinion I think that was the case here. Oh well. Go win it.

I'm not sure why a touch on the ball from Pope means he can take Gyokeres down. It's still a foul.
