Legendary Arsenal manager Herbert Chapman died on this day in 1934. Three weeks later, Arsenal appointed his widow as hostess in the club tea room on a salary of £500 per year. At the time, footballers were subject to a maximum wage of £368 per year.

We’re six points clear in the league, top of the Champions League and still in two other competitions - I’m not that bothered about Eze (or Nwaneri) not playing at the moment. There will be Eze days, if there aren’t enough Nwaneri days - send him on loan in late January. Football changes quick.

On this day 1886, the founding members of Dial Square FC finished work in the Royal Arsenal at lunchtime then travelled to the Isle of Dogs where they thumped Eastern Wanderers 6-0. A legend was born. Club secretary Elijah Watkins wrote a small piece on the game in October 1902.

The date on which the Football club now known as Arsenal FC was founded is a somewhat grey area. However, at their annual dinner in May 1890, secretary George Osborne stated that the club records had recorded the date as 1 December 1886. Happy birthday Arsenal FC.
