You want to ask an NPC anything? That's what TTRPGs are for, asshole. Make some friends.

I don't have all the answers, but in some of my recent teaching I've been re-approaching the "WHY" of storytelling and trying to combat the content/slop approach that so many corporations take these days. We have so much work to do to remind people what stories are for, but I'm optimistic.

If you *do* want to ask an NPC anything, you should be playing D&D with humans, who will know that the proper response to 90% of a player's questions is to back away slowly with a shocked or disgusted expression before trying to flag down a guard.

the entire job of a video game npc is to say "we are a peaceful people, but I've noticed the lord has a darkness about him" the first time you talk to him, then "I can't wait for the starlight festival!" each subsequent time

Imagining one of these guys installing a genAI NPC mod and then spending hours each day being encouraged into a delusional suicidal state by Preston Garvey or Cave Johnson or Kim Kitsuragi etc

Nothing grates me more than when AI game dudes are like "Don't you wish you could ask an NPC aNyThInG?" Absolutely fucking not. If you don't understand that every piece of writing is made with intention, character, and meaningful choice... you probaby shouldn't be directing a fucking video game.
