I’m not shy about why I mask in “shared air” and anyone who asks usually regrets it. My son was diagnosed with leukemia when he was five and just relapsed this year. He may need a bone marrow transplant eventually and I’m a prospective donor. Hilarious, right?

If you’re sick & considering whether to attend a planned social event, I am begging you to just stay home. Don’t put the onus on someone else—that feels like shit. “I’m not feeling well, do you want me to not come?” is a terrible position to put someone in. Take that on yourself to make the decision

The message disabled folks have been sent since 2020 is that we're expendable. It was "only" those with comorbidities who were dying at the start of the pandemic. Once vaccines were available, disabled folks might "fall by the wayside," but that's ok as long as most people get to go to brunch.

One of the most difficult things you will navigate if you develop a serious illness/disability (before you're retirement home aged) is every corner of society is telling you to "just go away". Everyone--government and even many folks you counted as friends--wants you to be someone else's problem.

I've spent the last 6 years getting comfortable with identifying as disabled, after spending my first 35 years denying it even to myself. It wasn't easy! We live in a society that fundamentally hates disabled people and thinks our lives are worthless, so embracing the identity is a big choice.
